Police are still investigating a recent tragedy that occurred in New York. A wrong-way collision took place, with a second crash happening moments later when another vehicle hit one of the cars that had just been involved in the first accident. The collisions resulted in two fatalities.
Woman who appears to have caused the crash was headed the wrong way
Preliminary investigations showed that a 42-year-old woman was behind the wheel of a vehicle that was traveling in southbound direction moments before the first collision. Her vehicle then struck a car in the northbound lane. The third vehicle hit her car moments later.
The woman initially survived her injuries, although she died a short time later while still at the scene. A 20-year-old woman who was a passenger in one of the other cars was transported to a local hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. Police did not provide any details as to what may have caused the driver in the first car to wind up in another lane, headed in the wrong direction.
Fatal collisions have far-reaching consequences
New York families who receive news that a loved one has died in a motor vehicle collision are met with shock and devastation, from which they may not ever fully recover. In cases where another driver’s negligence was a causal factor, families may struggle with feelings of anger, knowing that their loved one might still be alive were it not for the other driver’s distraction, intoxication or other issue. Many families act on behalf of a deceased loved one to seek restitution in court.
