Those who are used to driving in New York may expect heavy traffic at times. Something the average driver does not expect, however, is to discover another vehicle heading straight for his or her vehicle in the wrong lane. Factors that often precipitate vehicles veering into the wrong lane include driver distraction, intoxication and fatigue. Tragedy struck on Easter Sunday when a vehicle traveling south in a northbound lane hit another car head on.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly what caused the motorist to travel the wrong way on I-87. Sadly, a person who initially survived the collision died during transport to a hospital. Several others suffered injuries and were likewise transported to local medical facilities for emergency care.
Grief is intensified when a collision occurs on a holiday
It is devastating to learn that a loved one has succumbed to injuries in a motor vehicle collision. The grieving process is intensified when a loved one’s sudden death occurs on a holiday. The joy of that holiday in every year thereafter is mixed with sorrow as family members recall the day that they received word, letting them know that their loved one had died.
A head-on collision is almost always preventable. Such accidents are typically caused by driver negligence or because a particular roadway was not properly secured with wrong-way signs to alert motorists. A recovering victim or immediate family member of a deceased victim may seek justice in a civil court by filing a personal injury or wrongful death claim.
