Avoiding collisions at New York intersections

When several roads intersect, it increases the danger for motorists and pedestrians. In New York and throughout the country, intersections are high-risk areas where caution and alertness are needed to get through safely. Keeping several tips in mind can help travelers avoid collisions at intersections.

Nearly half of all motor vehicle accidents take place at intersections, often resulting in fatalities or serious injuries. Driver negligence and recklessness are two primary factors that cause such collisions. Here is how to improve safety:

Eliminating distractions

While approaching an intersection, it is not a good time to blast a favorite song on a car radio, turn around to speak to someone in the back seat or take a sip of a slushie. Any of these distractions increase a driver’s risk for an accident, especially at a crossroads. To navigate an intersection safely, eliminate distractions and pay close attention to the surrounding area.

Count to two before accelerating when there is a car in front

If a light turns green, and a car in front starts moving, don’t step on the gas without counting a full two (at least) seconds. This way, if the car in front suddenly stops again, a rear-end collision can likely be averted. Review driver safety information regarding intersections to learn more about avoiding collisions at these dangerous sections of roadways. If a crash occurs because of another driver’s negligence, restitution may be sought by filing a personal injury claim in civil court.
